media manager services

i just bought a new computer with vista on it. there is something on the
taskbar called media manager services. can anyone tell me what this is?

This belongs to Roxio. It keeps track of (as the name implies) media that
is installed on your system. You actually don't need it. You can stop it
by right clicking the icon and stopping it there. Or you can use MSCONFIG
to stop it. In MSCONFIG click the Startup tab then uncheck RoxiWatch. You
can do the same for the Roxio utilities like Drag to Disk.

If your laptop is one made by one of the major, mainstream companies, it
likely has a load of stuff installed on it from the factory that you don't
need and will probably never use. You can uninstall that stuff, item by
item, or you could consider a clean installation of Vista, assuming you have
a real Vista install DVD and not a "restore" disk.
