I'm using a tuner card to watch HDTV thru Media Center. Although the
program is widescreen, the picture in Media Center is slightly compressed
left/right - not 4:3 but not 16:9 either. Changing the resolution settings
doesn't help.

Is this a Media Center problem or with the tuner card?

There is a setup procedure that you can go through in Media Centre. It
takes a little while, but one the steps is to ensure the right screen ratio
is set.

Try changing your 'Zoom' settings.

While watching TV > Right-click > click on 'Zoom' a few times to cycle
through the options
