I have now read many forums to try to solve this problem....with no luck.
After a brand new clean (but painful) install of Vista home premium update
(on a newly built PC). My system is 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1 GIG RAM (667mhz),
Asus Mboard. Windows Update has been a big problem, and Media Center just
wont work.

When I use Windows update the whole system slows down to
an unusable speed. System runs like a dream (excluding media center) as long
as I go into "services" and stop the update service completely.

Media Center starts up normally then I get a error message media center has
stopped working and needs to shut down. It then offers to look for a solution
but cant find one. The reason I installed this version of Vista was to use
Media Center and now it wont work

Boot up is also very slow and seems to hang for a while before loading. Even
with the Windows Update problem I have managed to downloaded all of the
undates sucessfully, but it took around 7 hours and appeared to be hung the
whole time (my other PC on the same connection did it in about 10 minutes). I
really want to use Media Center and can handle not having access to updates
if
necessary. Can anybody help me please..??

Have you updated your video card drivers? What other software do you have on
your computer?

Thanks Michael, I've tried this download but the standalone installer always
crashes. I thought that all of these updates would have been included in the
normal windows update downloads anyway??

Thanks for your ideas. I have updated these by allowing windows to search
online. It told me I already have the latest drivers. It is on board video
Intel (R) 82945G Chipset family.

I don't have any other software installed yet. Just the operating system
(the third full clean install).

I just tied this again and it installed successfully! Even though it took for
ever......! Unfortunately it did not fix the problem :(.

When I start WMC it works...I can quickly flick through the menu, but it
then dies every time. It seems to die just as quickly if I just open it and
let it sit as it does if I'm using the menu. Also I now have a new message
coming up and I'm not sure whether this is related or not. " Microsoft
Windows Search Indexer Stopped working and was closed" this is now coming up
all the time as well.
