Maxtor One Touch III now locks up my PC

Hi,

It's been working fine for months. Now when I turn it on, it locks up
my PC. After I disconnect it, only then is it recognized by my PC but
only for a second or two (The Open With menu appears and the icon
appears in My Computer).

I have tried different USB2 ports.

Any ideas? Any recommendations on a better replacement make and
model?

I installed the Maxtor Backup software (which had been working fine
until a month ago) and VOILA! Ext. Drive is working great so far!

Just a heads up. Am going to try other backup software. I was weary
from the get-go with the Maxtor software as it always told me that the
backup failed - even though it rarely did. Tech support filled me
full of balogne neverless
