I recently got the Magicjack phone "box" that you plug into a USB port and
you get phone service real cheap. The phone service works great except for
the fact that it overheats my laptop and shuts it down. Any ideas on what to
do to stop this?

If it is using too much power, the way to go is too use a USB board with its
own power supply ie, its own power point!

But, tha defeats the purpose of a laptop for mobility

Get a "Powered" USB Hub and plug into one of the powered outlets.

A "powered hub" is an external device which plugs into one of your
existing USB slots. It has more slots, but also its own power supply.

You normally buy a Powered 4 USB Port HUB.
A cable from it plugs into 1 of your laptop's USB ports.
And a power cable from it plugs into a Power Point in the wall, or a power
board!!!!

The advantage of it is that you are not using the Power supply of your
laptop, thus overheating it, and causing it to shutdown to protect itself!!
