I have seen posts on this topic before which state that the problem is to do
with a worm - probably Sasser.

However, this is not occurring after Windows XP Home has started, but during
the start up process. It gets to the stage where it is saying that Windows
is starting, then stops with
lsass.exe error
The instruction at 0x7c914d1a referenced memory at 0x0000000000. Memory
could not be read. Press OK to terminate or Cancel to debug.
Either will then give a popup dialog with
NT Authority/System
Terminate code 1073741819.

It is therefore impossible to get into Windows in the first place, so
options using the Run command are not possible.

The PC is a neighbours that does not have the XP disc, only the recovery
disc that came with the PC.

Is there any way round all this?

TIA

Martin

Post note:

I have also tried starting with the boot option of 'Do not restart on system
error', but this still caused the problem.
Using an 'Ultimate Boot CD' I had, I used that boot CD to scanned the drive
for virus and malware and it has come up clean.

I can use that Boot CD to back up their data, but they have a lot of it if I
want to back it all up before doing a recovery back to factory condition. I
had hoped to do a repair install with my own XP CD, but it wants the
administrator password, which they don't know. They are trying to find it
from the company they bought the PC from. Maybe that is an option.

If I am able to go down the repair path, how dangerous is it to just do that
without backing up their data first?
