Hello, I hope someone could help?

A day or 2 ago my MS Word suddenly disappeared from the Desktop and the
Start Programs Menu, although I saw it in some page with many icons when I
started clicking away to find something. I also saw it in Belarc Advisor.
So I used the system restore, backed a few days, and the icon on the Start
Menu reappeared and thoought that's the end of the problem... but when I
clicked to open, it showed this message:

<<The Patch Package could not be opened. Verify that the Patch Packet exists
and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that
this is a valid windows installer Patch Package.>>

Hi,

Appears to me you just lost the shortcut to Word and not the program it's
self. No sure after a System Restore why it didn't bring it back correctly.
Two things you can try and I believe the first should work.

1. Do a Search on your system for the word... winword
Make sure in your search you have hidden and system files selected.
Once you find the file, right click it and select Sendto then Desktop
(create shortcut)
Now go to your Desktop and see if it will work.

than 8 winword files!!! Not knowing which one to send to desktop, I used
the one that had the most enormous kb's (6), and a couple of others (which

I tried # (6) because of the higher kb's, but got 2 msgs:

<<Microsoft cannot install lthe necessary files due to doucments and
settings error 1635...>> and the rest of the msg is much like the one I
rec'd previously. When I clicked "OK", this new msg appeared:

<<Microsoft has not been installed for the current user. Please run set up
to install application.>>

I tried # (5) and it said: "Windows cannot open this file. Windows needs to
know what program created it." I tried but couldn't find what program
created it.

I tried # (1) and it showed the same msg I rec'd in my first post here:
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the pp exists and that
you can access it..." etc.

What can you make out of all of this? Also, if I ever find out which one I
should keep, should I delete all others?

Thanks for the MS link too, but I had gone there yesterday and tried to
follow their steps but...I got lost! :o)

Option (6) above is the application itself...

you can right click on that and create a shortcut on your desktop

It looks like you need to run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility and
then reinstall Microsoft Office. See "You receive the 'This patch
package could not be opened' error message in an Office program":

Do you have your Office installation disk?

Also, is there any reason you are running WordPerfect in addition to
Word?

I can't find the CD, so I'm trying to remember (unsuccessfully) exactly the
version I have so I could buy it again. I don't want the latest, I think
the version I had was maybe 2002 or something but no tsure. I figure by now
MS will charge little for this old version. :o) Adela

P.S. I'll be repeating this info on my answers to the other nice people who
are helping me, so I wonder, is it permissible to answer to all on one
email, or should it be answered to each person separately?

I hesitate to try the Windows Installer CleanUp utility for fear it may
interfere with something else, as it did with my OE spellcheck. So I
thought I'd wait until either I can get it back, or until I can find out
what version I have so I can buy it again. I just can't remember as all
versions have the years and one of 2 or 3 words as names - not conducive to
remember as if they were called, say, "MS Office Daisy" or "Bluesky" etc.

As to WordPerfect, I trained with it when it was in its diapers, LOL! I
prefer it and still use it for most work although this too is an old
version...but loyal! ;o)

modify the registry. Never went into my computer's entrails. I never

Yes.

Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs

Scroll down to the Microsoft Office entry. Which type is it? These are
the different versions of Office XP (which you said Belarc Advisor
reported):

• Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition
• Microsoft Office XP Standard Edition for Students and Teachers
• Microsoft Office XP Professional
• Microsoft Office XP Standard Edition
• Microsoft Office XP Developer Edition

Also, note the Product Key and write it down. This way you won't need to
purchase another license. However, you will still need to obtain the
disk. I would imagine you would be able to borrow it from someone you
know. Make sure it's the same version. And I recommend you make a copy
of the disk, too.

Yes, Microsoft Word is part of the Microsoft Office suite.

If you would rather not fix your problem, that is your choice; many
people would rather pay a technician to do this. No problem with that;
just make sure you find a reputable one, and don't use a chain store!

If you ever do want to try the techy stuff, the best thing you could do
is purchase an external hard drive and a copy of Acronis True Image.
Make an image of your hard drive. Then, if you ever damage anything,
simply restore the image you made, and it will be as if nothing
happened!

If you e-mail us, then no one else will see our conversation. :-)

But something tells me you didn't mean to use the term e-mail. That's
probably because you're using Outlook Express to access this newsgroup,
and OE is also used for e-mail, of course.

Thank you again Daave! I found in Belarc but not in Add/Remove, my Home
Version MS WinXP whiich is:

Is MS Word included in the WinXP??? If so I do have the CD for this! But
if not, I'll try to borrow it and then I can use the above key with it?

Part 2: :o) Before I got the WinXP Home Edition some techi urged me to
buy the professional version and I thought I had deleted it from Add/Remove
but it's still there...Do you think I should keep trying to delete it?
However, it doesn't show my WinXP Home Edition. Is there a way to put it
there? I never noticed these things until I started searching around for
Word. Please forgive my confusion...

I think, but not sure, that when I deleted XP Pro from Add/Remove...it was
when I noticed I had lost Word. Could it be?

I'm afraid you misunderstood me, Adela!

I told you to write down the key for *Office* XP so that if you ever had
to borrow a disk to reinstall it, you could do so legally (that is, with
*your* license). I didn't mean for you to include it in a post to the
entire world! Furthermore, you are apparently confusing Office XP with
Windows XP, the latter being your operating system. So now anyone who
knows how to Google has access to your product key for your operating
system, which means they can try to use it. And if that happens, you may
not be able to use it. Hopefully you still have your Certificate of
Authenticity sticker; that should be your proof that you are the
rightful owner, but it might be a hassle.

I'm very sorry there was a misunderstanding.

Never, never, never post product keys over the Net!

Adela, I asked you to look for *Office* XP in your Add/Remove Programs
area. Office XP is the suite of applications comprising Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, etc. Windows XP, again, is your operating system.
Unfortunately, Bill Gates & Co. caused much unneeded confusion using the
letters XP in both situations.

Before it's too late (and I'm afraid that time may have passed, but try
it anyway), try to cancel your message (because of having posted your
Product Key):

In Outlook Express,

Message | Cancel Message

No, MS Word is part of MS Office. Neither Word nor Office is part of
Windows XP. Office needs to be purchased separately. It's quite possible
to purchase a PC with Office pre-installed. But, again, it's not part of
XP; you paid extra for it.

Again, if you have Office installed on your PC and you need to reinstall
it, but you have lost your *Office* installation disk, you can borrow
someone else's Office installation disk (if it's the same version) to
reinstall it, using *your* product key. Now, you said there was no entry
for Office in your Add/Remove programs. Is there evidence of it in your
Belarc report? And if there is, please don't post the ID or key!!!

If there's no evidence of it and if you don't have proof of purchase of
any sort, you'll need to purchase a new disk. An alternative is to
download Open Office, which is quite similar, but with the added bonus
that it's free.

Now you got me confused!

Perhaps you should start from the beginning:

What is the make and model of your PC? Where did you get it from? Was it
new or used? Did it come with Office (or at least Word)? Did you
originally have an installation disk for Office? Do you have any
Certificate of Authenticity stickers either on the PC case or elsewhere?
(Don't broadcast IDs or product keys!!!) Did the PC originally have XP
Home on it? Did you ever upgrade to XP Pro? Or are you confusing that
with Office XP Pro (I know, I know, it IS confusing!). What did you
think you deleted from Add/Remove? My guess is that you deleted Office
XP Pro. But you need to provide detailed info.

Okay, it really seems like you removed Office XP Pro. And yes, that is
how you lost Word since Word is part of Office.

Did this "techi" install Office for you? Did he/she sell it to you? If
so, there should be proof of purchase. Or is it possible this person
installed an unlicensed version? If so, that would explain why there's
no disk. But, really, I'm just taking stabs. You really need to provide
as much detailed info as possible!

Is it "Microsoft Office XP Professional" by any chance?

Oh Daave I realized of what I did right after posting it but didn't know I
could cancel. I just went to cancel but it was greyed out, probalby because
I answered a post just before yours? I think I'm a whole lot more stupid
than I ever thought I was. I know you didn't mean for me to copy the entire
thing, Daave, it's only I who did it of course, it has nothing to do with
you....

I'll contact MS and perhaps they could suggest something without my having
to buy it all over again. Maybe change the key number or something. No
doubt I shouldn't use that key anymore but will have to tell MS about it.
Sort of like putting a stop payment on a check? I have the Proof of License
sticker so I'll call tomorrow.

Thanks so much for clarification. The names ARE so mixed in that it's
difficult to sort them out. But now I'm sure I will remember the
differences. Costly lesson but well learned...

I don't think that should matter. Just make sure your post is
highlighted. Then "Cancel Message" should no longer be grayed out.

Make sure you're cancelling the right post!
 
OMG I'm afraid to tell you - when I saw the greyed out 'cancel" I opened my
post and deleted it. I know it won't help except within the MS forum here.
It went to my "Draft" fodler, so should I send it back to the forum and then

Oh, and it's possible to purchase Word as a standalone instead of
purchasing the entire Office suite.

Perhaps, your techy thought that instead of Word (which you had already
had), you should have a newer version of the entire Office suite. And
perhaps whatever problems you were experiencing were a result of
conflicting versions of Word.
