lost all pictures going from win 98 to win xp

My son updated an older computer we kept pictures on with out my knowledge. He upgraded from Win 98 to Win XP. I cant find any of the picture files that were there. Is there any chance they could be there somewhere or would the system just have wrote over them if he did not save.
