Loosing drive letter

I create a partition in Vista using the simple partition wizard,
formatting it and giving it a drive letter.

The drive letter vanishes when the PC reboots and most of the options
are grayed out. The only one not to be so is the option to convert the
simple partition into a dynamic one.

Any idea what is going on here?

TIA

Correction: the delete partition is the only command available.
