Logging onto Local Network and Mapped Drives

I have mapped network drives set up on my laptop which connects to the local
network via a wireless access point.

For some reason the mapped drives do not appear in Explorer until I physically
go searching for them. They are configured to "reconnect at login".

Once I've browsed the network and then opened each PC that has the drive which
is mapped to the laptop they can then be used normally.

The PCs do not have this problem with each other, or the laptop when it's
running.

Also, when I browse the mapped drives all the folders and files in them have the
"read only" flagged checked. But it's a greyed out checkbox as if some files are
read only and others are not. I can click on the check box and uncheck them. The
files are then made to have full read/write access. However, if I close Explorer
or move to another directory and go back to the one that I made full access the
Read Only checkbox is once more greyed out with the tick in it.

The laptop is running XP SP2 with MCE. The other PCs are running XP Pro Corp
with SP2 applied.

I suppose that what I need to know is how I can make it so that the mapped
drives are ready and available for use once the laptop is up and running and how
can I stop the folders in the PCs from going "read only" on me?

On the laptop I have my email program (Eudora) and Agent news client configured
to read the data files off one of the PCs, so that I can share the same data
between them. However, these two problems stop this from happening.

And no, neither Agent nor Eudora are running on the remote PC when I try to
access their data files from the laptop's installed clients.

With Agent I've resorted to physically copying the data directory over to the
laptop and am using my ISP's webmail service to access email on the laptop.

If anyone can advise how to fix these two issues that have plagued me for months
now it'd put to rest one major IT issue for 2007.

Thanks
