I keep getting the above message on my Toshiba laptop. I'm afraid that I
will have to reinstall Windows XP Home Edition but there is one file that I
must find and copy or save first. I can get the computer to a safe mode
command prompt only. Is there a DOS command that will lead me to the file
(which is on my desktop) so I can see it to hand copy or save it somehow?

In cmd install xp cd,exit the info screen, type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,
type:CHKDSK C: Then type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree,type:EXIT Restart pc
This may fix the problem in windows explorer,or the restart may.

Assuming you have "C:\" as the command prompt, then you can type
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name here\Desktop>
but substitute you user name. If your command prompt now shows the above if
you type dir and press return you should see the name of the file. Now the
tricky bit, what do you want to copy it to, floppy, USB, CD.
It just depends what you have available and if you can access that device
from the command prompt.
