This thread will always contain download details of the latest Java version.

Always make sure that your Java Runtime Environment is up to date
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

For Vista, Win7/ Win8/ Win10 systems
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment SE 8 Update 291
and save it to your desktop.
  • Click the " Java Download" button.
  • Accept the license agreement and follow the screen prompts.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on downloaded icon to install the newest version.
.

Note:
Apparently Oracle has decided to eliminate support for x86 ( 32bit ) Java forever.

For Win XP systems
Please download the last full version for your system... which is
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 7 Update 65

Note:
If you have the version: Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6 update 10 or later installed.... you will no longer have to uninstall the previous version before installing the latest one. (as long as there's only one Java version to remove)

If you have Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6 update 7 or earlier.... you will still need to remove the older versions.

The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it,
go to Start >> Control Panel >> Java >> Advanced >> Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot your computer.
