In a last ditch attempt to solve an issue that I have posted in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support I am posting the info here.

Whenever I right-click on the desktop and click Properties, the Display
Properties window is displayed. All tabs work as expected except for the
Desktop tab which propmtly freezes the Display Properties window and must be
Xed out of or ended with Task Manager.

In an effort to fix this behavior, I have done the following....

- ran "sfc /scannow" from Run to replace all windows core files from my
install CD (XP with SP2)
- Copy "shimgvw.dll" And ""mshtml.dll" From \Windows\system32\dllcache to
\windows\system32
- Click Start- Run and run these commands one-by-one :
regSvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
regSvr32 /i mshtml.dll (got message "could not find entry point")
regSvr32 /i shell32.dll
regSvr32 /i themeui.dll
- I updated the nvidia graphics card software and drivers
- I ran Microsoft Update

I am still in the same boat. Any help that you could provide would be
greatly appreciated.

could be the issue
you have pertains
directly to the registry.

the permission to the key
like the one below could
be preventing modifications.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

you could try an f3 in
regedit and search for
desktop and see if
anything stands out.

but if something like
the above doesn't help,
then a repair installation
with your windows cd
might be better than
wasting your time looking
for a needle in the haystack.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Gerry,

Not sure where to start, I deleted all event logs and restarted my PC. I
saw that an applications (SpiceWorks) was causing issues, so I removed it,
deleted all event logs and restarted. This is the result....

db,

The permissions seem to be OK. And, I did try to re-install (i.e. do a
repair) using my XP install CD. It kept sticking at 37 minutes remaining,
then it would restart the PC and restart the installation.

I had backed up my PC before trying this and had to use the backup to
restore the PC.

This made me think that maybe the problem was with the hard drive, so I did
a complete chkdsk test on the HDD and it found no errors.

Still dumbfounded.....

Ther is "no additional infomration" when clicking on any of the supplied
links except for the last error (Event_ID 7000) which says "To display the
WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered when trying to start the program,
at the command prompt, type sc query service name The information displayed
can help you troubleshoot possible causes for the error."

I did that using "sc query
##Id_String1.6844F930_1628_4223_B5CC_5BB94B879762##" and got back "[SC]
EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060: The specified service does
not exist as an installed service."

Looking in the services portion of Computer Management revealed that the
failing service was due to "C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe". It
is a remnant of iTunes (which I had uninstalled). I have deleted it and am
restarting to see if the same problems still show up.

Disabling that service got rid of Event_ID 7000, but I am unsure of how you
go about deleting a service. The file that it refers to is no longer on the
drive, as it was uninstalled with the iTunes uninstaller.

Desktop tab is still freezing

Re: Last gasp......I finally found the problem.....

As stupid as this seems.....I just let the frozen Display Properties Window
sit for about 30 - 45 minutes. When I came back it was no longer frozen.
But, I could see what had caused it to act like it was frozen.

For some strange reason (which I still must find and fix) instead of loading
the images in C:\windows\web\wallpaper, XP has chosen to load 1,830 stock
phots that I have in a folder under My Pictures.

It did not choose My Pictures, but a folder beneath it.

I am searching the registry for this folder name and would love to know how
to default the Desktop tab to search C:\windows\web\wallpaper as it does
out-of-the-box.

Any ideas on how this could have been changed or how to change it back?

Re: Last gasp......I finally found the problem.....

I found "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Double-click the "WallpaperDir" and change the directory there. "
But. mine is pointed at %SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper yet it opens
"C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Pictures\Stock Photos (D)".

Something's screwed up here.

Well, a very low tech solution might be to just switch the contents of
the directories. Be careful that you don't erase one by mistake:

If you just copy "A" to "B" and then copy "B" to "A" what you really
have done is make two copies of A and have erased B. Do it this way
instead:

copy contents of "A" to a temporary directory
copy contents of "B" to directory "A"
copy contents of "Temporary" to "B"

Now you have switched the contents of A and B.

Of course, if other programs are accessing these directories, you may
have created a worse problem than the one you solved. :?)

That's the craziness of the situation. I eliminated ALL files except on
wallpaper from the c:\windows\web\wallpaper directory. I also chose a file
at random from the list, searched the drive for it (it was in a dir with
1,829 other photos) and I moved all of those files to a new directory on the
desktop. THE FILES ARE STILL SHOWING UP IN THE LISTBOX !!

WTH? I really don't get it at all. I mean, how is it finding the files?
Is it actually finding them at all or is there a cached list that it is
looking at?

I have no clue.

jim

an incomplete repair
installation is definitely
a clue, but may not be
necessarily the hd and
could be the video.

something to consider: motherboards have
a setting to set the amount
of shadow or the agp. you should
check to see that they are not set
to zero.

something that should be easy
is to boot into safemode and
check the state of the desktop tab.

if it is disabled there too, then
maybe deleting or moving
all the wallpapers from the folder
might permit the tab to function again.

possibly the wallpapers are
corrupted or there is something
in the wallpaper folder that
is corrupting the cpl. if for
example a wallpaper at a size
of 80 megabytes or is a non pic file
has an extension of a pic, then these
may be corrupting the cpl.

however, if the tab is still disabled after
you clear out the wallpapers, then reboot
in normal mode and see if the cpl
it is enabled and does not list wallpapers.

if still there isn't any headway,
then run msinfo32 and go to
the tools menu and run
directx. if it proves to be
unsuccessful then this is
a clue that may be indicative
of a hardware problem.

Well, it doesn't freeze any more. Not even sure why it doesn't.

I had actually given up on it and just moved on - as it wasn't really
affecting my work, it just made me wonder what else may be wromg.

And it is showing the tiles that come with Windows, and the sole wallpaper
that I left in the %SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper folder.

Don't know why it works now....but it does.

Thanks for everyone's input!
