Toshiba laptop. The Toshiba logo comes on when booted. Then screen goes black. Computer continues to boot.

Using a flashlight to shed some light onto the screen, I can see that the graphics are working. I can see that there was a problem and Windows is trying to repair it.

I pulled the hard drive. Again, the Toshiba logo comes up and then the backlight just quits. I can see the BIOS text on the screen if I shine a flashlight onto the screen.

So it looks like the backlight is working during the POST and then it shuts down. Can this be a board problem?

btw: it's fluorescent, not LED. Maybe it's the inverter.

Didn't find the inverter, but did find a display with a fluorescent backlight. Connected it to the inverter in the laptop and it's shinning brightly. Looks like a bad fluorescent tube in the display. Tried only once to replace just the tube. It didn't go well because I broke the tube. Didn't know how fragile they were. I may try again, but be more careful this time.

Indeed that can be one of the downsides of laptop ownership Tony. However it helps you have the technical skills to mitigate any problem. Good luck with the new display :)

Awesome! Luckily on my two laptops (both HP Elite Books) no display issues yet. I did have an issue getting the track pad working correctly with Windows 10 though initially, but after some playing around got it working.

I've replaced a number of laptop display. I'm sure other techs here have done the same.
I think display replacements are only second to DC jack replacements when it comes to laptop repair.
