I have an Inspiron 1100 Dell Laptop and for some reason, it will power off
unexpecidably as if some one pressed the power button to abruptly shut it
down... it will do this at random times but not on a regular basis... has
any one heard of a virus that will cause the system to shutdown?

There are many viruses in the world but most of them don't shut down
your machine because the machine needs to be on for them to do their Bad
Stuff! In any case, random shutdowns such as you describe are usually
caused by failing hardware and/or overheating. Here are some general
hardware troubleshooting steps, but since this is a laptop your options
are somewhat limited. Take a look at them anyway and if nothing helps,
contact Dell tech support for repair/replacement.

Is there a LOT of dust on the fan grill? If so clean it out and see if that
will help the overheating.

Hi Robert,

I had the same problem a year ago on my Dell Inspiron as well.

I solved this issue by doing a good defrag (diskeeper)... since then no more
unexpected shutdowns.

I hope it also be the answer to your problem.

Cheers,
Pascal B.

Robert, this is not a long-term solution, but a test to see if
overheating is your problem. Set the laptop on a blue freezer-pack and use
it normally. If it does not shut down, find out if internal fan is
spinning/clogged with cat hair etc. Then go to the techy stuff, like
checking power supply... How to test ps in a laptop? If you find out, pls
post back so we will know also. s

There is no power supply in a laptop (there is a battery), the power supply
is external, it's the brick you plug into the wall and the laptop power
jack.

I guess the easy way to check the power supply would be with digital
meter...
