Kernel stack error followed by error loading OS

I recently had a blue screen warning on my PC (AMD Athlon XP 1800+, Shuttle
AK32A mainboard, WXP) indicating a kernel stack error. The PC rebooted and
after the bios loaded, I got an error message - error loading OS. The master
drive is a WD 20G, slave Maxtor 80G. Both drives appear in bios during
bootup, but when I went into command console and did a MAP, only the Maxtor
drive is displayed. The drives were labeled C: for the 20G, D: CD drive, E:
80G. Now the 80G is showing up at C. I was able to determine this by doing
a DIR and reviewing the files. To rule out a bad cable, I replaced the cable
for the HD's, still get the OS error. Is the 20G drive fried? Or is there a
bad boot sector? If the boot sector is bad, and I can't see the 20G when I
MAP in command console, how can I repair the boot sector?

Try reading the 3rd post after yours, run the CHKDSK C: /R
Also, download the MS-DOS disk check utility from WDC,the IE doesnt cut it,
the DOS utility will give enough info

Thanks, Andrew. I have a Windows 98 CD and a W98 floppy boot disk. Will
either of those work? So I should be able to see the drive if I boot from
the W98 boot disk? Also, could you provide more info on WDC? I'm not
familiar with the abbreviation.

I tried booting from the Windows 98 boot disk, but it really didn't get me
anywhere. My only options were to load W98 without formatting a hard drive,
format a hard drive or exit. I tried booting from a W98 CD, no luck there
either. After booting with the W98 CD, the only drives that displayed were
the floppy and the CD, no hard drives at all. I can't understand how my E:
drive became the C: drive and the old C: drive disappeared. I'm getting to
the point where, in spite of the work of reloading everything, I might just
load WinXP on the drive that I can see.

I downloaded the WDC DOS diagnostic utilities and received a SMART error
message: error/status code 0159. Bad news - reviewing the list of error
messages on the WDC website, code 0159 is defined as a defective drive,
solution - replace the drive.
