After installing the latest update kb947562 my computer keeps freezing up.
I'm on Home Premium anyone got the same problem? may be a virus i know but
was running fine until the update! using Avast Anti-Virus not picked anything
up? Have un-installed the update and up to now everything seems fine! Also
with the update installled my processers were doing overtime. Anybody any
thoughts?

REGARDS D LANE

Is Webroot Spy Sweeper or Sony Picture Package version 1.0 through version
1.8.1 installed?

Are you currently running Vista or Vista SP1? Did you upgrade to Vista from
WinXP?

I am running vista SP1 (not upgraded) I have neither of the
programmes you mentioned installed. Unfortunately the problem arose again
even after removing KB947562, However i then realized that at around the same
time i had updated my Adaware 2007 to 2008 version, and having removed that,
it now appears to be fine. Will let you know of any developments. Thank you
for your reply

If KB947562 failed to reinstall, it can't be the cause of this freezing.

FWIW, I have tried installing this update now six times, and it fails every
time. The computer acts very erratically during that install period, and
once I then had quite a bit of trouble getting it to run at all. Finally
went into it in CMD Line mode, and ran chkdsk, and it seems to now run OK.
The log was not accessed during the chkdsk operation, and reported that as an
error.

At this point, I wouldn't want to instal the update , and hope that it will
be fixed, 'cause any further updates will then also be problematic, I fear...

Any ideas would be appreciated

I am running vista home premium on a new computer (12 months
old) with SP1 installed. I did not upgrade! Yes i thought that it could not
be the update? but having read Jcjayhawks account i just dont know what to
think. it's caused so much grief i shall omit it for now. have run FULL scan
and found no virus. Previously on the odd occasion my computer has completly
froze when i have raised an Adobe pdf document? jcjayhawk mentions CMD line
mode What is that ? My computer has froze up twice since our last
conversation but it was intermitent and righted itself within 3-4 minutes
which it had not done previously. Seems to be running fine at the moment.
Strange?

That header shows that you are using a web interface to newsgroups.
However, we have no idea which portal you are using,
so if you need help with it you should post the URL that you are getting
in your Address bar.

There is a popup menu under the New button (or when Alt-M,Enter is used).
The menu lets you specify what type of message you are starting: Question
Comment or, in some cases, Suggestion. If you aren't seeing that menu
it could be that you have a popup stopper suppressing it. In case it's doing it
by script scraping you should also be able to open that menu by entering the
same command in your Address bar that clicking on that button would execute:

javascript:fnNewDropdown()

More questions to help diagnose your issues, I'm afraid.

=> Was Vista SP1 offered and installed by Windows Update or did you choose
to install it manually?

=> What anti-spyware application(s) might be installed (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Was Avast and/or any of
these applications running when you installed SP1?

=> Has a Norton or McAfee application *ever* been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial that came preinstalled on the machine when you bought
it)?

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, I am now using a secondary
computer as the problem has now become so acute that it is taking sometimes
hours to load and sometimes it gets to "microsoft corporation" page with the
bar above it and freezes in mid flight and that's it. In answer to your
questions i tried to install SP1 5 times using windows update but everytime
it said it had failed to install! Then on one of the discussion boards i read
about the latest "update agent" Which i installed and on 1st attempt it
installed SP1

As i have said i have AD-Aware installed but unstalled it, Well i thought i
had, but in programmes and files in "my computer" it's still there and will
not let me remove the core components even though i am logged on as
administrator. Yes i have windows firewall switched off and i run the basic
Zonealarm firewall as well Avast and all three were on at the time of
installation of SP1

Again yes Norton or Macafee did come pre-installed on my computer as a free
trial, but unfortunately which one it was i cannot remember, but i'm almost
certain i removed them, as i always use Avast and Zonealarm. I would welcome
any thoughts as the problem is now beyond my capabilities. Would there be
some software avaliable that would help?
