July Security Update Disaster

Dave Thompson

System:

Dell XPS
Intel Dual Core
2 gb memory
XP SP2 with all current updates.

Last night the sytem downloaded the July security pack. This morning it
installed and appeared to install properly.

Upon reboot the following occured:

Windows Live OneCare would not start.
Internet Explorer will not run.
System Restore Point will not run.
There are no users listed under user management.
It now displays the NT style login screen.
All Microsoft Office 2007 programs have issues. Linking and embedding fails
on startup.
Outlook 2007 declares RPC not running.
No printers are listed and I cannot install a printer.

Upon running MSCONFIG, the only Microsoft Services running are:
Computer Browser
DCOM Service Process
DHCP Client
Event Log
HTTP SSL
Server
Workstation
Plug and Play
Secondary Logon
Themes

There are many Microsoft Services that are stopped.

Just a few:

ASP .NET State Service
Application Layer Gateway
..NET Runtime Optimization Service
RPC Locator
RPC

and many, many others.

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and restart Remote
Procedure Call (RPC) set it to automatic. There are many other services that
depend on RPC. A good website to visit is BlackViper(www.blackviper.com)
about half way down the page on the left hand side there's a link to
Windows(XP-2000-NT) services. He has a chart on what services should be set
to(automatic-manual-disabled). Hope this helps, Greg T

Thanks, but the account I am using is the Administrator account for my
machine. I also tried it with the default Administrator account.

boot into safe mode, and choose the option to perform System Restore;
restore to the point made prior to the updates being installed.
 
Thanks, but I've been there, done that. System Restore is not available even
in safe mode. It apparently uses .NET. With none of the Microsoft Services
running, I "can't get there from here."

I've received a response from Microsoft with the "free Windows Update support
incident request."

The reply? Don't bother us, call your computer manufacturer. I feel that is
unacceptable since it was the July update that did the deed.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I have been a loyal MS
customer since 1984 and a staunch advocate.

Steps:

1. Turn off automatic update.
2. Do not buy 5 copies of Vista.
4. Shelve the two copies of Office 2007 I recently installed.
3. Move to Ubuntu soonest.

Thanks for the so helpful response.

After digging all day, I discovered that one or more of the Security Updates
reset all Process permissions to read only. At least the error did not
change third party process permissions; only the Microsoft ones.

I have set all Processes to Full Access. The system is now functioning
normally.

However, I feel that not all processes need or require full access. Does
anyone know what the permission are for the Microsoft processes.

I had exactly the same problem you describe on the computer I use at
work - after I installed the .net update last week most services failed
to start. Uninstalling the update had no effect.

How do you set the process permissions? I know very little about WinXP.

1. Run Control Panel.
2. Choose Folder Options.
3. Choose View.
4. Scroll down to Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)
5. Uncheck Simple File Sharing.
6. Reboot.
7. Open File Explorer.
8. Click on C:\
9. Right click and choose Properties.
10. Choose the Security Tab.
11. Click on ASP.NET Machine Account.
12. Click on the Advanced Button.
13. Click on ASP.NET Machine Account and click Edit.
14. Choose Full Control.
15. Run Control Panel and Choose Folder Options.
16. Choose View.
17. Scroll down to Simple File Sharing.
18. Check Use Simple File Sharing.
19. Reboot.

I hope this fixes your problem. I'm not sure if ASP.NET requires full
permissions. I am waiting on a response from anyone who knows.
