Good afternoon all,
I'd like an answer to what many may consider an easy or trivial kind of
question

Just *what* does having the Java Runtime Environment **do** for me as a
computer user? Will it help me see or hear web content better/differently?

I certainly wasn't going to SunMC to check for updates, as they act like JRE
is either the second coming of the Almighty, or your computer will hardly
turn on without it.

What prompts me to ask is yet *more* vulnerabilities have been discovered in
the last week or two. Some MVP's are going as far as un-installing it.

Pros/Cons

All advice welcome, and as always,

Many TIA,

Curt

It will let you see the content in web sites that use Java.

For example, go to
http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/mychess/kratop06.html

You won't be able to reply and see the chess games there without it.

Ugh! I hate to make typos, but I did it again. "Reply" should be
"replay."

I suppose a lot will depend on your surfing habits, I don't have it
installed on my machine and haven't found any need to either.

I do have MicrosoftVM but of course that is no longer supported but it
doesn't cause me any problems so leave it alone.
I think there have only been a couple of times that I have been to a site
that wanted the Sun version installed to work and they weren't important
enough to justify the install for me.

So as I said I suppose it all comes down to where you go and what you do
with your machines and only you can say if you really need it or not <g>

That's my opinion for you for what it's worth <g>

1. Uninstall, e.g., JRE Runtime Environment 6.0 Update 2* via Add/Remove
Programs. If you see other versions listed in AR/P (e.g., JRE Runtime
Environment 4.2 Update 3), uninstall ALL of them, too.

2. Delete C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found. Do NOT delete
C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

3. Open an IE window and go to
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp > In the middle of the page,
click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
6u2 > If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to
display the blocked content; :hand: You do NOT have to install the Java Web
Start ActiveX Control > Accept the license agreement > Click on "Windows
Offline Installation, Multi-language" and Save the file
jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to your desktop; do not Run it.

4. When the download is complete, *close all browser windows* and
double-click on the saved file to install the update.

Tip: Choose Custom install to select only the part(s) you need/want.

Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure
and reboot if prompted to do so.

*An updated version of JRE 1.6.0_02 was released on 13 Jul-07. If you
installed JRE 1.6.0_02 before this date, you should uninstall the older
version and install the new one (IMHO).

Hi Robear,

Went and got the new version., and did according to your instructions.

Remember the good ole days when product didn't have to be patched all the
time, and when Add/Remove worked a lot easier?
