Windows 2003 is this true? (regarding Active Directory)

hey

(just a question from me, I'm a noob in windows networking... but I spend my
whole free time trying to be better :) )

Is it true that before applying Active Directory in a windows network (winXP
machines and windows server 2003 as domain controller) each computer in the
network need to be able to ping each other using their machine name ?? So
that a wins service need to be configured for the network?

Hi Jeff,

The WINS service is optional for AD and really only prefferable for large
multi-subnet networks or if you are using Exchange server. You should be
able to ping via machine name or ip without it. Your DNS is what controls
the machine name/ip translation. Make sure your DNS is correctly setup for a
healthy AD.

The installation of AD is what makes a 2003/2000 member/standalone server a
Domain controller.

I have 2 computers at home (winXP and windows server 2003), they connected
via an gateway. This is little network I've configured at home. each pc can
ping the other pc using IP address of the oher pc.. but they cannot ping
using pc name.

If I configure the win2k3 machine as DNS server, will name/ip translation
start working in my network or must LMHOST also be configured on each
machine before ip/name translation works in my network ??

If you correctly configure your DC with DNS then yes name translation should
happen, there is no need for lmhost file configs. Once you setup DNS on
your server make sure that your client pc has your DNS server address added
into its tcpip (if you are using static ips). You should also then notice
that your server DNS would contain a dns record of your client pc, if it
doesnt appear there try a ipconfig /registerdns from a command prompt on
your client.

Yes, it is winXP pro with sp2 installed

no, i haven't been able to add my winXP to my new domain... it's very late
here now, so I go to bed. I'll start looking more into this problem in about
16 hours time... (sleep and my day job)

When you run your AD install (dcpromo) make sure to select the option to
have it "install and configure the DNS server, and set this computer to use
this dns server as its preffered dns server." A correctly configured AD DNS
should have (among other things) a _msdcs.(your domain name) in the
forward lookup zone. If you had setup your DNS before installing Active
Directory AND selected that you will set up DNS manually later, then you
will now need to rightclick on your forward lookup zone and under the
General tab change your type to Active Directory Integrated, and then
restart your Netlogon service.

hi,
if you want only name resolution, isn't necesary to install AD there, its
enought to set up a DNS server there and of course to setup corect.
