Is this hardware or software problems?

I've recently bought a lot of new computer things, and installed, but
I've got problems with the sound/mouse (and maybe other things that I
don't know about)

The problem is that sometimes, often when I start a program like
Explorer and for example Winamp is playing in the background, the
sound starts to clip/get distorted like there wasn't enough resources
to play the music and if I move the mouse the cursor doesn't follow,
but gets locked for a second and then moves to its new location. The
same thing if I watch a movie clip, it hangs for a second. The cpu
load is at 1-2%. I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers to
the audio card from your homepage.

What might the problem be? Some conflicts in BIOS or what? Or is it
problems with drivers? (I've downloaded and installed recent drivers)
Any tip on how can I solve it?

Thanks for any suggestion!

[Product Information]
Asus P5K
Winfast Geforce PX 8600 GT
Intel Core Duo E6550
WinXP

Downloaded drivers from winupdate? (at least when you say 'your homepage'
thats how I take it)
Bad move, Install chipset & other drivers from Asus & Geforce sites &
whatever other hw you have

Right. Do NOT use drivers from anywhere but the Mfr of
your hardware. Very often it's been bastardized and
isn't quite what it purports to be, otherwise. No idea
why, just personal experience and that of others who
made me realize the folly of it all. Now if I need an
NVIDIA driver I go to NVIDIA, not MS.

At face value, sounds like a video problem with the mouse.

Would also suspect (due to the sound stuttering) an irq conflict at the bios
level. Doesn't have to be the sound card/chip. Some things just don't like
sharing an irq.
Dave

No, all drivers was downloaded from asus, realtek etc, not win update.

How can I find if there is an irq problem? I've checked windows
logging messages, but nothing there..

The "Sharing" looks normal for an Intel chipset. Exactly what problem

I will check that. But do you think that the problem might be that I
didn't re-install Windows, and Windows have the old configuration and
bios another? Is this possible to solve/reallocate without a fresh
installation of Windows?

I am not going to discount what Lil' Dave posted.

However, if the configuration of the operating system on the disk does not
match the current hardware, then almost anything will go wrong.
A repair installation is in order.

I found that it's the drivers for Intel SMBus which creates the
problem. If I don't use the driver included at Asus homepage but use
Windows Update instead it works..

Glad you got it working.

Found that the SMBUS irq assignment rather stange in another reply. Also,
some using shared remapped irqs instead of separate irqs for each device in
XP environment. Most notably, firewire.
