hi
i am running an old win98 advent computer. recently i have had an ethernet adapter plugged into my computer to be able to network it with my win XP computer....all was fine until yesterday, my dad was on the internet searchin around wen the computer frooze and started makin a loud beepin very similar to that of a police car, it then went into a blank screen and now refuses to load anything up, it won't even reboot! if it is my mother board is it worth me gettin it changed or buyin a brand new computer for £200? if the board is ganna cost me £150 to fix anyway i don't see the point and may aswell buy a new computer! thanks for your time!

How many times did it beep?
Does it beep when you try to start it now?
If it does how many beeps?
Those beeps are very importat when troublehsooting hardware problems. They tell us if the memory is bad, if the video card is bad and much more.
My bet is your cpu died.

it is a constant beep that refuses to turn off until the system is harshly shut down or it crashes itself
if it is my CPU is it worth me changing it or shud i just buy a new updated pc?

That kind of depends on quite a few things.... For instance, what type of CPU it is, how old the hardware is.

200.00 GBP
United Kingdom Pounds = 362.513 USD
United States Dollars

150.00 GBP
United Kingdom Pounds = 271.884 USD
United States Dollars

Thats according to exchange rates on XE.COM

I really can't see a motherboard costing 150 pounds, whoever told you this is trying to rip you off.

200 pounds for a NEW machine is probably right on track, but I question the parts going into this new machine.

I myself could build a quality tower for that price, but realistically, a move to a DECENT machine would probably cost more.

Not that you wouldn't get a dang good machine for that price... I just question the distributor you have looked into for this new machine.

If you could list what you CURRENTLY have, that would help. Because it DOES sound like a dead board or CPU.

i wasn't quoted £150, just an example lol didn't see the point if it was ganna cost that much when i might aswell spend an extra £50 and buy a new machine. its only a second machine really....got my kick arse machine in my room running the router....just need the second machine to be able to get on the internet, use MSN and allow webcam access! lol so aslong as it will let me do that then i fink it mite be the best £200 i eva spent! :D its from PC World btw....got alot to lose if they sell me a duff machine here it is

pc for £209
thanks i will get it sorted :D

I guess my only complaint is, its an eMACHINE.

I can't tell you how much I hate EMACHINE,HP,COMPAQ,GATEWAY,DELL..etc..

Well not so much Dell, but the rest are horrid.

If you do decide to buy this machine, do yourself a HUGE favor, and first thing before you start using it... UNINSTALLL almost all of the APPS with it in the control panel. PC's like this are very notorious for overkill on apps that are useless, but worse yet, they usually have them at startup and that slows the machines down quite a bit.

For 207 POUNDS, $373 (US) you should be able to find something with a little more power. Celerons are not a very good CPU, I bet you could find an ATHLON setup for the same price, or even less....MUCH FASTER..I added up all the components on my end and it came to

186.490 GBP
United Kingdom Pounds

And that was before shipping, so the price of the eMachine is right on par with a home built of equal parts. But you do get the benefit of a manufacturers warranty, which can be taken for what its worth.

But like I SAID, IF YOU DO BUY THIS, I strongly advise uninstalling EVERYTHING you won't use.
