Internet explorer and windows explorer lock up when Internet explorer menu
bar is used, either with a mouse or via keyboard shortcut. As soon as a
menu item is selected I will get the drop down menu and then everything
ceases to function. I can do limited operations via the task manager and
can stop the iexplorer and explorer processes. However, I cannot restart
them via the taskmanager File/new task. Additionally, shutdown via the Task
Manager stops short and won't shut down completely. The only way to get
everything back is to hold the on/off button down for the full 5 seconds and
that leaves a mess in the temp directories. Help, Help, gotta have help.

Well David, these recommendations are pretty generic but they may solve it
for you.

In no particular order:

Boot in Safe Mode, then boot on Normal Mode

Run Ad-Aware http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html

Insert your XP installation CD and run System File Checker
Start > Run, then type sfc /scannow
