Can DDR2 be used on a motherboard that has the X38 Chipset and made for
DDR3? I'm interested in the Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard.

Thank you;
David

Go to the Asus site and check the specs and/or the manual. That will
tell you for sure.

The Intel® X38 Express Chipset features Dual-Channel DDR2 memory support, see:

http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/X38/index.htm

However is the Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard design with regard to supply
voltage for the memory, "reduced from 1.8 V for DDR2 to just 1.5 V for DDR3
which limits the power consumption and heat generation", see:

http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=572&l4=0&model=1875&modelmenu=1

Thus can not the DDR2 be used on the Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard although
it features the Intel® X38 Express Chipset.

DDR3 only. The chipset supports both, but the DIMM socket type soldered
to the motherboard, determines what you may use. Only DDR3 sockets on this
one.
