Is Intel's Viiv just something similar to Microsoft Media Center, or is
it something that enhances video performance?

It's rather confusing, as what I find seems to imply it's a 'hardware
and software solution'....

I'm trying to figure out if uninstalling it (it came with the computer)
would cause any problems.

I don't think that removing the drivers would be a good idea.

It is confusing.

I bought a Dell computer a few months ago and had the option for an Intel
Viiv processor or the otherwise similarly specified regular Intel processor
at the same price. Everything about Viiv rang alarm bells in my mind - it
seemed more to do with marketing, branding and filling my machine with
crapware, than with offering me a better processor.

I opted for the regular processor and have not felt any deprivation.

I have Viiv but don't have the drivers installed. This is a home built
machine with a Core2 Quad processor on a D975XBX2 motherboard with 4GB of
RAM. Whatever Viiv is or does I don't seem to be missing it any.

It's like Media Extender. Whenever someone adds an XBox 360 or
the like to your network, you'll be notified and have the opportunity to watch media
content on your PC or on the device. I use it to play DVD movies on my TV.

I don't think Viiv has anything to do with processors. The difference
may have been whether the entire system met the minimum specs for Viiv.

Hi,

Based on my understanding, Intel's Viiv is similar to Centrino, and for the
later one, it's not one technology but a set of technologies (e.g.
processor, main board and wireless network chipset) to achieve a lower power
consumption.

In the case of Viiv, it's purpose is to achieve a better multimedia
experience, and for that, you need to meet the requirements documented here:

http://www.intel.com/products/viiv/requirements.htm

In simple words, the concept is to use an integrated/bundled solution to
address a specific need/problem. The main part of the integrated/bundled
solution, of course, will be Intel's product(s) or technologies along with
third parties products (that meeting the specs or use Intel technologies).

Hope this helps and good luck.

So, with Intel stopping development, is it really needed? Any known
consequences if I uninstall it and get rid of the multiple drivers and
other stuff it loads?

Hi,

My understanding is that some computers are customized for using Viiv
technologies so it would need those drivers in order to function properly.

You can contact your vendor for additional information and visit the
following Intel support page for verifying installed components and
versions. I won't uninstall drivers but will stop/disable any unnecessary
service and/or program from auto-launch.

http://www.intel.com/support/viiv/top_support_topics.htm#ssetup

Hope this helps and good luck.
