"Installs Updates and Shuts Down Your Computer"

My computer is about a year and a half old, it's an HP laptop, and for the past couple weeks, it tells me I need to install updates constantly. Sometimes, even after I have JUST finished one. If I don't do it, my computer moves at a snail's pace, but it's
getting so that I can barely use my laptop without having to do updates about three times an hour. HELP!
