Installing a print driver from a Win98 machine...

We have a shared printer hooked up to an older Win98 desktop machine. The
printer is an HP PSC 2200. When an XP user attempts to add a printer and
specifies the shared printer location i.e. \\computername\printername they
are then asked to select a driver etc.... Windows XP does not include a
driver by default for the PSC 2200 so it means the user has to use the "Have
Disk" option and locate the driver CD or install from a network location.

Is there a way I can add the XP driver to the WIn98 machine so that the
driver will be automatically installed on their XP machines when they add
the printer?

I am thinking it can't likely be done (the reverse of a win98 user adding a
printer from an XP machine) but maybe I am wrong??

Thanks, Brad

You could put the drivers in a folder on the 98 box. Windows98 isn't a
server.

Yes, I was actually going to place the drivers on one of our servers
instead. What I was really hoping was that somehow by placing the XP drivers
for the printer on the Win98 box as well, that those drivers could then be
automatically installed when a user add's and connects to the printer for
the first time - like what happens in XP now... But I just don't think this
is possible.

You could try asking in the Win98 group, but I suspect that feature
wasn't supported at that time in history.

you are likely right but worth an ask I guess!

It should be possible to add the printer drivers before connecting the
printer. Having said that, I note that the printer is an HP and HP do come
up with some convoluted installation routines sometimes. My own HP printer
requires that you connect it part way through the installation - something
that you should never do with a parallel port.
