Installed font displaying as default

I downloaded and installed a font, and it is showing up in my fonts directory and in all my programs, but it always displays as the program's default font. Tried closing and re-opening programs, uninstalling and reinstalling the font, etc. I don't think it's a problem with the font file, as I know other people have used it.
