I mistakenly erased Windows Media Player from my Vista computer.
What do I need to do to get it back on and working? I am pretty good
with the computer but by not means an expert. Thank you in advance
for you help.

WMP 11 is built into the OS. It's still there somewhere.

Try this:
Backup your registry!!
Then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer. Right click and delete
it. Reboot. Hopefully you'll be asked if you want to reinstall it.

Try this:

Start>>Default Programs>>Set Your Default Program>>in the left pane you
should see Windows Media Player. Highlight it.>>Set Program as Default.

It's an interesting thought, but that won't work: the Windows XP installer
does not and can not reinstall the Windows Vista player at this time.

There is no uninstall functionality: you may be referring to the "Hide
Access" functionality, though? That simply removes the shortcuts and
AutoPlay access to the player.

It's an interesting thought that alkon may have accidentally activated Hide
Mode, though, so perhaps you're spot on here. =)

No, deleting that will just leave your system (more) broken.

What is an interesting thought?
If you're following up to a previous post, you don't need to include
everything. Snip out what's not relevant. But do include what is relevant.
Some people may have missed the original post and/or the post you are
replying to.

He linked to the player download. That was an interesting thought that
wouldn't have any useful effect.

Thanks for the clarification. =)

Could you clarify what you mean by "erased Windows Media Player"?

Did you delete the player files through some sort of System File Protection
hack, did you corrupt the registry, did things suddenly just stop working,
or -- how did you get *into* this state?

What happens if you try to directly run "wmplayer.exe"?

I don't think there's a clear definition of what the problem on hand
actually is (as regards specifics). I could cause this to happen in a ton
of ways, all of which would require different resolutions.

I've asked various questions which might be illuminative.

If alkon truly "erased" the player, I'd probably start with "sfc /scannow"
or System Restore.

Hi, Bob,

I doubt that anyone can offer an effective "interesting
thought" on how to solve the problem without more specific
information. The OP states that he is 'pretty good with
computers' and that statement combined with "accidentally
erased' raises questions in my mind as to exactly what
happened. For example, was he deleting 'unnecessary' files
in various folders and really did delete the WMP.exe file by
accident? Or perhaps he only turned off its functioning by
using features/programs. Perhaps he accidentally deleted it
from the start menu or did something else that affected it.
Unless the OP explains exactly what he was doing when he
'accidentally erased' it then any advice given is based only
on assumption, and is at best, a shot in the dark.

I'm sure you realize by now that many of the requests for
assistance in here are from relatively new computer users
with little technical knowledge about computers and who, as
a result, often use inexact, or incorrect, terminology and
often do not clearly describe the details of what the exact
problem is and/or how it occurred. In this case, we know
what the problem is (WMP doesn't work anymore) but we don't
really know how it came about. The answer to 'how it came
about' is the key to finding the solution.

So, my question to the OP is: Exactly what were you doing at
the time this happened and why do you think that you
accidentally erased the program?

Hobo

The OP can always restore the registry from his backup. I think it's worth a
try.
