this?

I suspect you are moving the mouse when you left-click and creating
copies. I have a friend who does that often, creating copies of files
and even folders.

No...In My Pictures I open a folder in which there are, say 50 pics shown as
thumbnails....
I hold down the Control key and then click the thumbnails one by one...after
I've clicked and highlighted about 4 or 5 thumbnails eg pic1, pic6, pic8,
pic9 etc another 4 or 5 thumbnails appear in the folder entitled copy of
pic1, copy of pic6, copy of pic8, copy of pic9 etc?

Alan is right, you are moving your mouse sideways unintentionally. Try this,
open a folder, and highlight one file. Press the control key, and then down
arrow twice, Let up ctrl, then press spacebar, then ctrl-down arrow twice,
then let up control, press spacebar. You can do this any number of times
without the copying.

You are correct. When highlighting the files less speedily works just fine.
Many thanks.
