IIS ISN'T RUNNING

Mac

Am trying to install SQL 2005 Developer and it tell me that IIS is not
installed. (XP home) I downloaded and installed IIS 6.0, but it is not
running. It is not on the list of components to check. When I go to the
IIS6 Manager my computer is not listed and when I try to add it I get a
message that says IIS is not running on this computer.

How do I get it "running"?

No real surprise there, since IIS it isn't supported in XP Home and
necessary files and functions are not present.

IIS isn't supported on XP Home.

Generally, you get it running by enabling it on an XP Pro system. Then, it
will work and will be supported.

However, if you google "install IIS XP Home" you can find some workarounds,
many of which are not simple and some of which require install CDs for other
operating system versions, such as Win2000 Pro or Server. Be warned that
this may destabilize your system.

There are other web servers that you may be able to use with the SQL
developer software and which are supported on XP Home. However, the
simplest approach may be upgrading to XP Pro.

You upgrade to Windows XP Professional since Windows XP Home doesn't
have/cannot utilize IIS.

Why do you need a more powerful desktop? I hope you do not think that
because you will be running Windows XP Professional instead of Windows XP
Home that the hardware specifications have changed?

You have no reason to open port 80 unless you plan on hosting an actual web
page on that machine you want visible to the world. If all your use of said
web page will be limited to that computer only - you should not open the
port to the world.
