The IDT Audio Codec update reappearred in the available automatic windows
search for updates after it was successfully installed earlier,

Steps
1) running as admin, vista 32 home premium, unable to update to sp1 due to
sigma tel sound driver
2) on 4/30 IDT Audio Codec update was available in automatic windows update
3) admin installed
4) sound gone
5) on 5/1 contacted gateway chat support, told to download sigma tel driver
version 6.10.0.5274 which downloads a file, double click, installs files
and instruction sheet. Then run a setup.exe from start (it's unsigned) as
admin
6) we have sound
7) wait a while and have windows check for updates (hoping sp1 would now be
available).....Nope...instead IDT Audio Codec update shows up again
8) contact gateway, Gateway says to unistall SigmaTel driver, and let
windows update again, and re-install driver.
9) okay, sigma tel unistalls (sort of, trys to fix itself first, leaves some
files)
10) select windows updates IDT codex and a defender update
11) reboot required and no sound again
12) go through the gateway sound driver re-install, hitting okay to overide
existing files about 26 times, sound restored.
13) wonder if this is going to happen again when automatic update kicks in
again around 3 AM est?
14) or will I get to upgrade to sp1 instead?

Stay FAR, FAR, AWAY from that IDT update from Microsoft. It is
destroying computers all over the place. The only fix is to use System
Restore.

When it shows in Windows update, go to the list of updates to install,
uncheck it, then right-click and choose 'hide'. That should prevent it
from being installed.
