identifying server edition

Hi All

I am having a bit of a problem identifying our server edition, I hope you
can help.

We have a HP MSA20 NAS 2000 box attached to a DL380 server (with a HP
Storage Server sticker on it). The problem is when I go to
system-->properties it says "Windows Server 2003 standard edition" but on
the windows logo screen saver it says "Windows Server 2003 Applicance
edition"

We are looking to move our Exchange DB onto the NAS box but it needs to be
the Storage Server edition and have the windows storage feature pack
installed (which I assume can only be installed on Windows Storage Server
edition?)

This is your "Windows Server 2003 Appliance edition"...

Exchange should install on this system without issue as its basically
Windows Server 2003 Standand Edition with a few extras, but this is probably
not supported. :-)

The safe supported route for a small to medium business wanting NAS and
Exchange would be to use Windows Storage Server Edition allong with the
Windows Storage Server 2003 feature pack.

Windows Storage Server 2003 feature pack extends Exchange and Windows
Storage Server to allow storage of Exchange 2003 databases and logs on
Windows Storage Server hardware. Here is a good doc about "Managing Exchange

Hi Coraleigh

Thanks for the reply. It seems we do have storage server edition as I found
the feature pack on the servers hard drive. Don't kknow why the screen save
says applicance edition though?!
