IDE cd-rom drives don't read data

I have a cd-rw and a dvd-rom (IDE). Both can read audio cd with media
player, but when I insert a data disk the dvd drive says to me that can't
read the disk, while the cd drive sees an empty disk or a 0 byte disk (file
system RAW). It is possible that is an hardware problem (may need to be
cleened...) or is sure a software preblem? In that case, have you same idea?
I forgot: in the Management Console it's all right!

Please help...thank you

Reboot (not Restart) the PC and try again.

I have a similar problem to that of Compo. Both my CD ROM and CD/DVD ROM
drives are unable to read any CD's inserted in the drives and because they
are both affected I suspect a program called MagicISO that I downloaded from
the Microsoft Partner Website. I have Nero software installed and wanted
this program to work with it but since installing the MagicISO software my
CD's no longer starts automatically and I am taken to a blank page ( after
clicking on the ROM Drive) where it asks me to select the files that I want
to put on CD. I un-installed this program but there are files, and other
shortcuts on my left mouse button that I have been unable to remove. Upon a
second visit to the MagicISO website I read that it imbeds Microsoft Windows
Explorer and uses the double window unification user contact interface. As I
am a semi-novice all this jargon is beyond me. Can you please put some light
on this matter or will I also have to reboot Windows?
Thanks for your attention

CD repair for XP:
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Elmo I followed your instructions without making any changes as I could not
see anything there that would affect my ROM Drives! What I have discovered
is that the Drives Paths (e.g. Drives D and E are no longer there!! What to
do? As the drives no longer work, I cannot un-install and re-install. Please
can some-one help.
Thank you for any advice.
