I think I have a virus infecting a few MAJOR programs

As of an hour ago I could not open AIM, McAfee, or HP Total Care
Advisor. When ever I try to open one of these three programs I get and
error message. Here's an example when opening McAfee

mcshell.exe - Bad Image
c:\Windoes\system32\SHFolder.dll is either not designed to run on
Windows or it contains and error. Try installing the program again using
the original installation media or contact your system administrator or
software vendor for support.

Then if you hit OK it comes up again and again four times with that
same title then the title changes to "E398ADA39B044C5808A09B3D49548DB:
mcshell.exe"

The only way to get this error message to vanish is open task manager
and end that program. What's going on with my computer?

Also a program called On-Acess Scanner service has stopped working. I
don't know that program. Please help.

PS- My cousin thinks it's from Myspace.

The mcshell.exe file is part of McAfee as is the On-Access Scanner service.
The SHFolder.dll is part of your Windows operating system. Since the error
message is coming from McAfee and since McAfee is a garbage program anyway,
I'd uninstall McAfee and install a better antivirus, then scan with it. If
you are not behind a router (are connected directly to the Internet via a
DSL/cable modem) disconnect the Internet connection first before you do
this. Suggested antivirus programs are NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast if you
want a free one.

If you can't manage to uninstall McAfee because things aren't working, try a
System Restore to date when things worked and then uninstall McAfee.

Of course, it never hurts to make sure your computer is virus/malware-free
since it is quite possible that some malware has broken McAfee:

None of that's worked so far. ://
My computer doesn't have any system restore points prior to the virus.
I'm gonna let my friend Paul have a look since he's a computer guy but
if all else fails I may just download Linux.

Would downloading that be a bad idea?

If you're not much of a "computer guy" then Linux probably is not the best
choice for you.

Only you can make that decision. Based on your posts, I rather doubt Linux
will be your cup of tea but certainly you can try. I suggest using a
Knoppix Live CD to get a feel for Linux, but the latest Ubuntu can also be
used as a Live CD and is more easily installed to the hard drive than
Knoppix if you want to do that.

If you wish to stick with Windows, taking the machine to a computer
professional (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place) is your next
step. Or just start over.

What I mean by "computer guy" is that's his job. I've used Lunix before
I just don't know if I want to put it on my computer or not because of
running two systems at once.

It is a possibility my what you have is a malware designed to counter
disable all know / well known anti-malware ( terminating its services )
and one thing realtime capability of those apps was targeted by the binary
infector.

1st contact the support of your AV product get second opinion
2nd get additional help here ( 866 727 2338 ) PCSAFETY ( microsoft free
support )
3rd get the opinion from the first one and tell us about it and we can go
further / we need to indentify what malware and variant it is that you have
in your system if
indeed it is a malware.
4. as option you can use online scanner ( there are a lot ) make sure its
from the leaving AV company since its not onboard your system it may - just
may identify it for you
5. Update us about if any is successful

No offense intended but you're still not convincing me that you're ready
for Linux.

Computer problems? Have you checked the loose nut in front of the keyboard?

Nawh-- none taken. I've been told of a few programs to try if I really
want to use Lunix.
But first we've checked out my computer and it looks like some disk
errors and things so I've been told (and had figured this after a while)
I need to do a system recovery. Thankfully Vista came out with the
brilliant "no disk" crap so the programs on my computer and I don't have
to tell my mom about my computer troubles.

Thank you all for your help.
