Just FYI, why would I want to try Ubuntu? Just FYI. Ubuntu isn't ready for
prime time. Just FYI. I need a computer so I can WORK. Not play around
(with the exception of writing these posts!).

Ubuntu is a TOY OS. Windows is the standard that MOST companies use. Just
FYI.

Ubuntu isn't ready for prime time

http://www.heypete.com/index.html

This ISP uses nothing but Ubuntu so it is already in the prime time so
you post does not jib

Windows is not the standard for heypetete.More are moving to it. MS
has a problem on its hands.Ubuntu will be the standard in years to
come.not MS

It is no longer in the prime at heypete.
Maybe they would still be there if they used windows?

Nice of you to quote that they are discontinuing their service, but
neglecting to quote the reason. Here, I shall do it for you:

"It's been our pleasure providing service over the last several years,
but due to so few people using dialup service any more it is no longer
economically viable for us to provide service."

So the reason is the simple fact that dailup is relatively difficult to
sell in a age where Broadband is standard. Makes sense to me. Who would
pay 12.95 a month for 56k dialup access when they can get 6mbit cable for
30 bucks or so a month.

But please, do try to explain to me why, if they used windows, they would
have more dialup customers. Please, I'd love to hear that explanation.

Maybe they concentrated on Linux users?
There aren't many of them.
If they did and they concentrated on Mac users there would be ~10x as many.

As its an American ISP and I am in the UK maybe you know why they couldn't
find enough customers?

Yea, cable is pretty much a standard in the US. So if you have cable TV,
chances are extremely good you also have access to cable broadband these
days. This counts for most areas except really rural areas that don't
even have cable. So, broadband is very widely spread and generally sold
in packages along with the TV subscription by the providers for a
discount.

So I have a very hard time seeing how an ISP could ever survive on
selling Dialup alone these days. Most of the dialup providers I knew in
the area I lived in for about 10 years died. Only very large providers
and phone companies generally still offer any kind of dialup service.

Also, again, the operating system used by the ISP has absolutely zero
relevance. The Internet protocols are operating system unaware. They are
all the same no matter if the server is linux, windows, or insert any
other OS here. So the OS the ISP is using has absolutely no relevance to
their customer.

When you go to a website, you don't know nor care if the website runs
using IIS or Apache now do you? This is no different.

Matter of fact, it's very likely that the very router you are using right
now to connect to the net is Linux based.

In truly rural areas there is little hope of broadband any time soon, in
smaller cities and bigger towns (you might consider them rural just
going by population) there's often cable TV, in the bigger cities the
choice is usually good.

Well a couple of friends are out in the woods as it were and I've talked
to the telco guys and there's no way they can shove a DSL signal that
far along an old phone line, and not much in the way of electrical
supply or spare wire that could power repeaters. This one local telco
guy would love to do it, they have put DSL where others refused already,
but there are demarcation issues in places and simple terrain / cost
issues in others.

This is in contrast to the UK where distances are much reduced.

They are still around in the UK but there are specific regulatory conditions
that allow them to be profitable ATM.

Most ISPs don't use linux machines to provide dial up.. its too expensive.
They do what I did (I actually setup a (small (~120 lines) dialup ISP to
test the effects of VoIP on a carrier VoIP solution I was involved in
designing) and buy a dedicated rack that takes E1 primary rate and put it
into a bank of dsps and out pops IP on the ethernet connection. Far cheaper.

Then its up to the ISP what other services they want to offer.
Mine does very little ATM.. mail is by google, no usenet, website is a
marketing tool probably on iis.

I know that.
Its just interesting that someone should quote a failed ISP as an advert for
linux.
That's the trouble with IT, it changes all the time so what sounds good one
day doesn't the next.

One of them is open source.
It has very little to do with mainstream linux other than borrowing the name
so it sounds cool.

Yea the US has no such conditions.

I can imagine.

Good point, I had the same thought myself.

Heh, tell me about it. These days I've given up on trying to stay with
the latest and greatest and just use whatever technologies happen to work
for me.

It's not unlikely it may use the same Kernel (though potentially a
modified version of it), but obviously everything else is going to be
different from mainstream.
