Yea, cable is pretty much a standard in the US. So if you have cable TV,
chances are extremely good you also have access to cable broadband these
days. This counts for most areas except really rural areas that don't
even have cable. So, broadband is very widely spread and generally sold
in packages along with the TV subscription by the providers for a
discount.
So I have a very hard time seeing how an ISP could ever survive on
selling Dialup alone these days. Most of the dialup providers I knew in
the area I lived in for about 10 years died. Only very large providers
and phone companies generally still offer any kind of dialup service.
Also, again, the operating system used by the ISP has absolutely zero
relevance. The Internet protocols are operating system unaware. They are
all the same no matter if the server is linux, windows, or insert any
other OS here. So the OS the ISP is using has absolutely no relevance to
their customer.
When you go to a website, you don't know nor care if the website runs
using IIS or Apache now do you? This is no different.
Matter of fact, it's very likely that the very router you are using right
now to connect to the net is Linux based.
