Hi,

Running XP Pro with SP2 (I think). I Have 2 "Add or Remove Programs" in my
Control Panel. I also noticed I have XP SP3 listed, but when I try to
uninstall it, it tells me it's really SP2.

Is my laptop on drugs?

Thanks, RickB

Hi Rick,

It seems SP3 has caused this on many computers. Do a search for
appwiz*.cpl on your computer (NOTE the asterisk). You should have one
in your system32 folder and maybe another in your i386 folder (if it
exists). If you have more than one in the system32 folder (named
appwiz(2).cpl, etc), remove all except the original named appwiz.cpl.

Report back,

How and when did you install SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were ANY of these application running when you installed SP3?

Hi Robear,

I had a similar situation and posted about it in this newsgroup on May 25.

Please see

for more details.

Perhaps doing three successful installs/uninstalls of SP3 -- all with my
antivirus and anti-malware apps disabled -- is what caused the extra Add and
Remove icons in Control Panel.

In any case, the suggestion by Terry R. -- that I copy the appwiz.cpl from
my I386 folder to my Windows\system32 folder -- fixed the problem.
