OK first of all let me apologize because I know this isn't the correct NG or
even the correct forum to ask this question. However knowing that there are
still some old IT dinosauers still out there I'm hoping I canfind my answer
here.
I have this old HP LaserJet 5si MX printer that I had setup about 8 years
ago on this network. Worked fine but after a few months we purchased a new
laserjet printer and the 5si sort of went unused and untouched. Anyways our
new printer (not new anymore) needed to be serviced so we wanted to use the
5si temporarily. Well it didn't work. I remember a few years ago we stopped
using it because it would always get a paper jam. So now all of a sudden it
wouldn't even print. I could send a print job and it would always error out.
So I thought I'd print a test apge and checkoutthe configuration. Upon
review I noticed that the gateway was incorrect. Now here is the "excuse me
but I m totally having a gigantic brain fart" part I need a hints or
reminders.
The LCD on the 5si is on the blink so it is very hard to read. I can't
recall how I set it up. I either inputted the network settings manualy using
the printers menu functions or I think I used HP Jet Admin to set it up. Now
I can't recall but I believe in the older days Jet Admin would do a
discovery using MAC hardware addresses? I downloaded the latest version of
HP Jet Admin 10.0 and cannot run a discovery searching for hardware
addresses. It appears it will only search for IP ranges. So here is my
problem. I did a cold reset on the 5si so all the network configuration is
cleared. So I'm lost as to how to get it back on my network. Does anybody
remember how the older HP LAserJets with Jet Direct cards are seup on the
network? Thanks and please excuse my ignorance or lack of memory.

If it isn't set to DHCP... normally, if it has an internal NIC you can press
the button on the face of the card, on the back of the printer, and it will
print a config page. With that you could connect to it with a crossover
cable and your laptop... after you set the laptop to a static IP address on
the same subnet.
Also, I think you can hold that button in while you power on the printer,
and it will do a reset of the card. Setting it to DHCP. After that's done,
print the config page and you can find out it's IP address.

Yes I am aware of that John. Problem is that after do a cold start and reset
to factory defaults, print a configuration page there is no IP assigned to
it. Looking at the TCP/IP STATUS on the config page is states BOOTP/RARP IN
PROGRESS. I thought in the older days that the Jet Admin would actually do a
search and discovery for hardware MAC addresses also.

Well that is my problem Meinolf. I can't get an IP assigned to the printer.
Configuration page shows IP as 0.0.0.0

Hello AllenM,

If you use the arp command and then type arp -a do you see the assigned address?
Did you try to access it with web browser?

"BootP in progress"? If you've reset it, it should say something like "DHCP
boot in progress".
How old is it?
If it never gets an IP address, you aren't going to get any where with that
printer.
Do you have an external HP print server, or another internal print server?
With that printer never getting an IP address, your options are limited. As
you've probably already realized :-)

That is correct John. I'm curous as to how I originally did ut. I thought I
had inputted to network configuration manually through the printers
Configuration menu. Is that possible? Can you manually do this? I can't
remember and cannot find the proper menu to do so if it exists. Also I do
not see anything about it in the manuals.
It is an older LaserJet 5Si MX with an internal Jet Direct card.

You can do that. As long as you can see the diplay. HP should have a
document on their website with directions on how. I haven't done that in
quite a while, so I can't help.
I would give that a try. Sounds like your only option at this point.

That's what I thought and honestly believe how I originally set it up.
Unfortunately for me as stated the LCD panel is crapping out so reading it
is a bit hard. But if I can find documentation on which menu it is I'm sure
there is enough readable print on the LCD for me to do so. thanks for all
your input John.
