Dude, that's a bit strong. I'm writing this now using Windows Mail under
Windows Vista, but the only reason I use it is to run Visual Studio. Of
course you can program .NET in Ubuntu, as well as nearly everything else you
can can do in Windows, but of course VS is better by far than anything Linux
has to offter up to .NET programmers. Oh, and I play NFSU2, which for the
life of me I couldn't get Wine to run under Ubuntu however I tried. I use
Ubuntu for everything else. There are advantages and disadvantages to both
systems...

Linux Ubuntu:

Advantages:

*It is free.
* You can install any program for practically any function you can think of,
for no cost at all, by starting up the Add/Remove program, checking the box
next to the software name and clicking Apply. This massive database of
thousands of packages is also searchable.
* It runs faster by far than Windows Vista, and is much more stable.
* Regular updates that do not require you to restart your computer nearly
every time they come.
* Ubuntu is practically immune to viruses, and there aren't any anyway. lol
* Unlike most Linux distributions, it's very easy to install proprietry
software from the menu I mentioned earlier. DVD players, MP3, MPEG support,
etc.
* Easy install of NVIDIA graphics drivers.
*A hugely powerful command line.

Disadvantages:

* It does not support many Windows applications at the moment, especially
games.
* Harldy any commercial games are programmed for Linux.
* It can be complex to install some programs and drivers that are not
directly supported by the Ubuntu Community.

Windows Vista:

Advantages:

* Lots of support by the industry. Almost all manufacturers of
hardware/software make it able to run under Windows.

I'm sorry, but this is the only advantage Windows has, although it is a very
big advantage.

Disadvantages:

* It is slow, and takes up too much memory and processing power just to sit
there displaying its posh arse. lol
* There are THOUSANDS if not millions of viruses for Windows, and although
it is more secure, Vista is still practically wide open without a 3rd party
package such as Norton IS to keep it safe, and even with protection like
Norton it is not completely immune.
*It is expensive.
*It creashes more regularly than Linux and sometimes, a restart is required.
In Linux there are seven terminal sessions open at once, six of which you
cannot see and the seventh your desktop is running on. If your dektop
freezes completely because of an application crash, simply switch to another
terminal session using a keystroke and end the application causing the
error. Then switch back to the desktop. Restart avoided, no data lost. You
would have to be a Linux guru to crash all seven terminals at once.

For me, don't know about you, these are reasons enough to be a fan of
Ubuntu. I used Windows for years, and until I used Linux I thought it was
great. Like I said, Linux can be a pain sometimes, getting things setup and
working. But once everything is as you want it it won't suddenly stop
working again or change somehow for no apparent reason. I'm glad to see the
back of Windows, but I don't think the people who prefer it to Linux suck, I
just think they're missing out.

I have the best of both worlds. You should try it. lol

Regards,

JM

Negated by the fact that you need to purchase Windows, which is the only
OS anyone needs cause it will run everything.

Most are worthless.

Nope, just not true.

Nearly every time? Oh, just sometimes like Vista huh?

Keep telling yourself that myth. Oh, Vista is also virus safe.

So it Vista.

With a Matrox cards? Oh, forget about that, I had to switch to a box
with an ATI card to get it to install. Otherwise no go!

There you go. All linux distros start out like a hobby and soon end up
as a job...that you didn't need.

What the hell does that have to do with anything, huh?

Bullsh*t! That is just not true.

Not any of my Vista installs crash.

If an app crashes in Vista there is no need to restart Vista. Just close
and restart the app.

Restart

Read the linux ng's. There must be a lot of linux guru's...LOL!

Are you on the "every six months ubuntu beta treadmill"?

Sorry, but I've been trying linux distros for over a decade now and
always with the hope that..."this is the distro that will actually do
what all of the linux fans say it will"....
Hasn't happened as of yet.

You have two OS's where only one is really needed...that one would be
Windows Vista.

You should try it. lol

I also share my box with windoze and linux, only because I have to. I
have a small partition of 10g set asside for windoze and only use it
for specific .EXEs that I unfortunately cannot do without, otherwise I
would prefer to get rid of it all together. I absolutely refuse to get
Vista, am still using XP, I just don't like the way that MS relys on the
public to debug their OS. But you know what, Mac is getting a lot of
attention, especially now that they are using intel, and linux is
really stepping up now, I think that this is the beginning of the end
of MS. Oh please oh please be true.

Don't be fooled. Linux isn't 'stepping up'. It is not, hasn't been for the 8
years that I've followed it, and probably never will be suitable for
mainstream desktop computing. Last time it was apparently 'stepping up',
there were Linux magazines available and all sorts. MS spends millions
ensuring that their product provides what their target audience wants.
Whether it works smoothly or not is another matter. Linux (in it's Ubuntu
incarnation) on the other hand, looks virtually the same as it did back in
the days when Red Hat was due to take over the world. It doesn't listen to
what the majority of people want. I'm sure the acid test for most people
would be being able to install their copy of MS Office natively, with the
same ease as in Windows. Can you do that?

Linux is great as a server, but it's too raw and clunky as a desktop. But
hey, it has some nice screensavers! :-)

Great as a toy...not so great as a business/work tool. The majority of
people that I know through work and personal life, do not want OpenOffice or
other such applications. They want to use their Works or Office software.

You need to hang out with a different crowd, one that thinks. You
haven't been following anything because Ubuntu works out of the box and
needs no terminal work to get it or keep it going. Ubuntu has come along
way since I first installed it in 06. For example, you can now change
the grub order with a GUI. NTFS drives are automagically recognized.
Linux friendly printers install with three clicks, scanners as well.
Plug the web cam in and out pops Cheese. No software on a CD required.

What can be done with Ubuntu:

Email
Surf the web
Burn CDs.
Rip CDs.
Listen to music.
Watch vidoes/DVDs.
Scan and print.
Spreadsheets.
Presentations
Newsgroups.
HTML editing.
Games like Chess, Tetris, all kinds of solitaire, etc.
Make videos.
Download photos from a camera and organize them.
Translations.
Use a dictionary
Learn how to touch type.
Edit images.
Send and receive a fax.
Take screenshots.
Create .PDF files.
Create and use a data base.
Instant messaging with over 10 different programs in one including
Windows Live Messenger.
IRC.
Bluetooth.

and much more!

What you can't do with Ubuntu:

Worry about:
WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,
DRM,
Viruses,
Root kits,
Spyware,
and
Malware.

You didn't notice all the security problems that Apple does not want to deal
with? You didn't notice at all that Vista showed in real life to be the
safest of all? You just hate Microsoft because it is Microsoft? You did not
notice the first huges leaks that are found in Open Office? Dream on.

Ubuntu is great at playing games. Ubuntu is designed as a TOY and not a
real OS.

Better leave this to the big boys. Can you say MAC or PC?

Yea you can download photos and organize them. But just a few.

Yes, you need someone to help translate Ubuntu into English

Sure - Surf to the WEB and find the dictionary.

Wow - I didn't know you can type using Ubuntu! The designers must have
spent years on this one!!!!

Yea, very basic editing. For power work use Photoshop on a PC or MAC.

You don't need a Ubuntu for this. Your printer can do this task alone!

True but Ubuntu can do it if you want to use your computer. Windows can
too, some of them. My kid likes Japanese videos and Windows won't cut it
but Ubuntu does. Kinda difficult to watch YouTube on your TV, sonny.

Actually, Windows is better at games. Does your conclusion still hold,
sonny?

I can make videos all day long with Ubuntu.

A few what? Photos? I just uploaded an entire camera's worth, over 200
photos.

No, YOU need someone to help you. I know what it means. And, if you had
ever installed or ran a Live CD, you'd know what it means the first time
you open Firefox.

NO! It has a dictionary program that comes with it.

You need to work on your reading comprehension skills. I wrote "touch"
type. Ya know, the kind of typing where you use most of your fingers and
never look at the keyboard?

GIMP is just as powerful if you know how to use it (you don't).

And then have the printer email it to someone?

I have one with over a thousand. I can see you haven't tried Open Office

IM is one of the most popular programs around and you say "BFD"!?

No, you snipped this because it doesn't mesh with your fear, uncertainty
and doubt (FUD):

What you can't do with Ubuntu:

Worry about:
WPA and WGA raising their ugly heads,
DRM,
Viruses,
Root kits,
Spyware,
and
Malware.

No, Frank, you're the one that never helps anyone and cannot post
without including some unfounded insults, lies, profanity and bluster.

He has no idea why he's here. He's an out of control linux troll who is
too broke to afford Vista.
IOW's he's very jealous of all Vista users.

Let's help each other with Vista and keep the rest off this

Fraid not, Frankie. You're the liar here. You never help anyone. All you
do all day long is lie, insult, use profanity, make up weird sexual
stories about people and bluster.
