It was directed at Frank, not you. =)

Yes but then again, supporting the windows API also was a whole lot easier
then than it is now. It isn't just the win32 api one has to worry about
these days, it's also the other several dozen API's that didn't exist in
the 95/98 days.

You don't need shell commands. My average usage of shell commands a day: 0
I have a co-worker running on Ubuntu who wouldn't even know what a shell
is, nevermind how to use one. He's got zero problems. UI does everything
for him and then some.

Well then I understand why you are going on about shell commands.

Linux 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Far cry from 1.1.59 isn't it?

Desktops and the UI have seen just a tiny bit of advancement since 1.1.59.

I don't know how stupid you are, why don't you tell us. We can guess
by your daily antics, but come on Frank, tell us how incredibly dumb
you actually are. Maybe it will make you feel better admitting it.

Proving once again what a doofus and putz you really are Frankie
numbnuts, but we already knew you were, yet you have some absurd need
to reconfirm you are a moron and you do it daily for our amusement.

If you insist on pretending what you do besides making an ass of
yourself daily is so critical why in the hell do you use software that
has a long history of newer versions always desperately needing
security updates, patches and hotfixes? That is after all Windows' sad
21 year history. So again, as you always do, you've proved you're just
another idiot babbling foolishly never really knowing what he's
saying.

I seriously doubt that NASA is running anything that is "mission
critical" on any off-the-shelf software like Windows or linux. I would
assume (and I've not worked on or with any NASA mission critical
projects) that they are running Unix based software that they've written
in house seeing as how they purportedly have the brains and talent to do so.
However, recent news reports about diaper wearing drunken astronauts
does indeed cast doubts about their creditability and reasoning ability.

Like it does on YOU Frank. Who changes YOUR diapers and why are you
always drunk and lying? I bet everyone would like to know.

Are degrading post like this really necessary? Or is it a "he did it first"

Re: I Am Currently Downloading Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) Daily Bu

Just my ten cents worth but Ubuntu is certainly a quantum-leap ahead of other
Linuxes in terms of general useability. Top marks to its developers.

HST, I get the distinct impression that Linux and Windows are in many
respects converging technologies. With Vista we now face the complexities of
user-accounts and permissions in a way most Windows users are unfamiliar
with, but which Linux users have known (and cursed) since they first learned
to say "chmod 770" on finding that inexplicably -and infuriatingly- they
could not open their own files on their own computer.

Basically, both OSs are way, way overcomplicated for what they do. Which is,
to run a personal computer intended for one-per-desk deployment. A return to
a more streamlined, efficient, understandable platform is IMHO the way to go.

Unfortunately I don't see that happening any time soon.

If you were really an adult you would be able to skip over posts and
posters that bug you.

As you are unable to follow your own advice that would explain your constant

Perhaps English is not your first language. Could your try this sentence
again. I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps some punctuation would help.

It's called a typo numbnuts, do try to get up to speed or just be
another idiot like Frank. Totally your choice. I type very fast and
don't bother to proof read or spell check or worry about grammar. If

Even if MS had good tools, the closed source code and the licensing
requirements impose obstacles for people who are trying to get a product
out the door. With Linux, they don't have to worry about any of that.

Don't forget DOS... it's still a good choice for SCADA controls and CNC
machines. But Linux has the feature set for consumer electronics. And I
have no doubt it is causing nightmares in Redmond. What if...

....certain Linux devices begin to function like desktop computers, but
with a simpler interface, and people prefer them over their office PCs?

....manufacturers of devices that connect to a PC sell their products with
a live CD, thus enabling consumers to bypass Windows altogether when they
upload music or whatever it is they are doing?

Only for customers that pay. I don't think the Chinese are gonna
suddenly start paying $400 for Windows. And Microsoft will quietly make
it possible for them to pirate Vista, because that is better than having
XXX million Chinese users switch to Linux.

Microsoft will end up screwing its best customers and rewarding its worst
customers... and that can only work for so long.

>
> What's the next version going to cost? 599?

I don't know, but I bet the OS will be free 10 years from now, at least
at the consumer level. Linux keeps getting better in steady increments,
but the price stays the same... $0.

Hmmm.

I have seen photos taken inside the International Space Station. The
"main room" is a jumble of wires and complicated instruments, but it also
has a number of laptops mounted onto metal braces. They are all
Thinkpads, and as far as I can tell, they are running Windows XP.

I checked just now and couldn't find the pictures I was looking for, but
maybe someone else can.
