Best to ask the experts in an OE newsgroup.

Download and install Thunderbird and let it import everything OE during
the install. Then go to C:\Documents and settings\username\Application
Data\Thunderbird and copy everything in the folder to an external hard
drive, DVD, flash memory or CD. When you reinstall XP and Thunderbird,
go to the same place and nuke everything in the Thunderbird folder and
replace it with your back up and Thunderbird will have *everything*,
including your accounts, mail and address book. OE is much more of a PIA
to back up and restore. Not only that, T-Bird has junk mail control and
does real time as-you-type spell checks which OE will never do because
Microsoft no longer supports it (as if they ever did).

Oops, forgot to tell you where to get Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird. It's free.

Address Book - C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
OE folders - C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{F1A538C7-EF06-46C9-BDD4-E9C2AB9BA915}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express
(Big long number between Identities and Microsoft is the user ID)

Locate the folders for mail and address book - these are in different
locations, and helpfully, the folders are hidden.

In OE, look for Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder. In Address
Book, go to Help, About. Repeat for each email account.

Copy those folders to a backup disk, and check the backup.

When you have the new system set up again, import the messages, from OE
Store Folder, point the import utility to the folder. Import the
address book in a similar way.

Note that importing the address book will lose folders - but not groups.

On my system, that's not where the address book is.

The best way to find it is to open the Address Book, and go to Help, About.
The path to the WAB file will be displayed.
