how to remove a disk from a RH system

I have systems with powerpath devices.
i did a powermt remove dev=emcpoweraa
Drive is not under powerpath control any more.

Then i tried to do a pvremove on the backing devices.
sday sdbc sdda sdde

I get the following error on all of them. As you can see they are there in the directory.

[root@homer dev]# pvremove /dev/sday1
Physical Volume /dev/sday1 not found
[root@homerdev]# pvremove sday1
Physical Volume sday1 not found
[root@homerdev]# pvremove /dev/sday
Physical Volume /dev/sday not found


[root@homer~]# cd /dev
[root@homer dev ]# ls sday*
sday sday1

shortened out put as this happens on all drives.
