Windows 2000 How to *really* turn off windows firewall in XP

In the "Windows firewall" settings, the General tab, I have the
firewall turned Off.

In the security center, however, windows firewall is always On.

How do I really turn windows firewall off?

Security Centre indicates 'Firewall......on/off' - nothing about 'windows
firewall'

Perhaps you have a third party firewall installed?
If not & you really have no firewall that sounds like an exceptionally dumb
move

It's "Windows Security Center"

>Perhaps you have a third party firewall installed?

I have other protection and I tire of windows security asking me
if I really want to run a program when I double click on it in a
"folder".

I have other protection.

Thats immaterial, if you have a third party firewall configured Security
Centre will show Firewall on.

But it's the *windows* firewall that intercepts run requests -
and it is supposedly turned off. I'll bet that MS never tested
turning it off so it's probably a bug.

What is your 'other' protection you previously mentioned.

Router, antivirus, proxomitron (HTTP front end)

A router does not supply sufficient protection
niether is antivirus or proxomitron a firewall protection.
Windows in its latest update incarnation is designed to turn on the firewall
by default, unless you have a third party firewall, which you dont.
When you get the the msg about running a program from the Firewall msg
centre, you tick allow & remember.

A router hides all your computers behind one IP address, therefore it is
impossible for hackers to get in.

Dream on ... and not all routers use NAT (Network Address Translation).

All of which is irrelevant to the original issue/question, which
was exactly the reason I was hesitant to provide details. I'll
go ask in the winxp group.
..

Quite frankly you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think your
protection is adequate, without a Firewall.
A correctly configured Firewall would not constantly require you to 'allow'
programs to run.
Any winxp security update will turn the winfirewall back on unless you have
a third party firewall installed.
