I have an easy one (I think). we are using windowsXP Pro. I want the
computer to be setup in a way so when it is rebooted (like when a windows
update forces reboot)...the computer logs into windows automatically as a
particular user instead of leaving us at the normal log-in screen
(ctrl-alt-del to activate it).

I know that I have seen people set up XP Pro to do this...I just don't
remember what the steps are.

Try going to control panel/user accounts, click the advanced tap.
There's a check box there "Require users to use alt-conrol-delete.

Keep in mind this probobly won't (and IMO, shouldn't) work if the
machine is part of a domain, not sure about a workgroup.

That will only give the OP the Welcome Screen and he wants to go
directly to some user's Desktop.

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -

One of the very easiest ways to do this is to download the XP Powertoy
"TweakUI", go to the Login section and enable "autologon".
