I (had) my Automatic updates off, but *her downstairs* re-enabled it <slap>,
and it has downloaded IE7, and keeps trying to make me install it.

How do I get rid of the downloaded file?

I don't want Internet Explorer at all!
I much prefer Firefox

Let it install but set your default browser to Firefox..

Well, yes, if that is the _only_ way, I suppose I could.
:-(((

I'd rather be shot of it altogether though.
....and Media Player too, come to that.
I never use either.

You've encountered Microsoft at it's finest. Once an auto update is
downloaded you had best install it. You can then remove it using the Control
Panel->Add/Remove Programs. Once you have uninstalled IE7 run this little
app http://www.snapfiles.com/screenshots/ie7blockingtool.htm to prevent it
from being force fed to you again.

Zulu, you and 50 million other people. Just live with it and
that's it.
You will need IE to get stuff from Microsoft, as you are forced to use
it to d/l so they can make sure you're an honest person with no bad
personal habits.

Time to give *her downstairs* her very own login account, what *her
downstairs* can and can't do with that account is the real question here.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website & scan for updates (Custom) > Uncheck IE7
and "hide" it.

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

All IE7 will do is replace IE6 which you don't use anyway. I honestly can't
see what your problem is..

If *her downstairs* installs IE7 in her User Account, *him upstairs* will
also have it.

Step 5 on this link will delete uninstalled downloads:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spack.htm

See Step 48 for information on disabling delivery of IE-7:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/wufix.htm

But if you use Firefox, it is really a non issue which version of IE
is installed.

Firefox will cause your cat to develop warts. If you don't have a cat, you
should be okay.

Thank you :-)
Just wha t I wanted, particularly *2*, which is the folder I couldn't find.

I have since found that if, having given up the unequal struggle and started
the install procedure, one is then presented with a window that gives the
opportunity _not_ to install.

Why I wasn't offered the opportunity to NOT install it BEFORE I started the
installation process is a mystery that only MS will understand.

:-)

As for my cats, and FWIW, they both succumbed to old age, one last yeat at
17, and the other recently at 18. :-(

YW and thanks for your feedback. I assume the problem is resolved.

If you configure Automatic Updates to use the Notify Only option, no updates
will download OR install without your permission.
