How do I activate a second video card?

I purchased my laptop with an upgrade to a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M video card. After downloading an architectural program, the program said it detects two (2) video cards. The manufacturer of the program stated that the video card I'm using, Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, isn't powerful enough for the program graphics. and I should activate the NVIDIA card. I had no idea I wasn't running with the GeForce card I speced. How do I go about activating the NVIDIA card that I wish to use and deactivate the other?
