How can I use Sony VGPXL1B MEDIA CHANGER IN VISTA ULTIMATE 64 BIT?

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I am trying to install the software for SONY
VCPXL1B Media Changer, and the installer tells me "Vista is required" (But I
HAVE Vista....)

Sony tells me me to try installing in Safe Mode, but that doesn't work. I
think the problem is the Installer doesn't see Vista 64 as Vista. Sony says,
I dunno about 64 bit, they THINK it should work....

Anybody out there have any REAL answers for this? Or know of any software
out there that will actually work with SONY MEDIA CHANGER under 64 Bit Vista?

If Sony does not provide 64-bit drivers and software for the device it
simply won't work. Device drivers are one of the few areas where you cannot
use 64-bit to 32-bit translation. That's almost assuredly why their
installer is failing - it is looking for and not finding a 32-bit
environment so it reports that you have the wrong operating system.

Re: How can I use Sony VGPXL1B MEDIA CHANGER IN VISTA ULTIMATE 64

Actually the device drivers are included with VISTA, it's just the PROGRAM to
use the media changer I need. Sony wrote a Media Center app that allows use
of the Media Changer functions for XP Media Center and Vista 32-bit Media
Center, and it would probably work in Vista 64 as well, except their
Installshield installer doesn't work with Vista 64 (doesn't recognize Vista
64 as being Vista) - and Sony has discontinued the hardware and has no
interest in providing any new installers for it.

I found an application called dBpoweramp which runs well on Vista64, and
has a Batch Rip module that supports the VGPXL1B. This app works GREAT, and
costs $36 including a year of BMG metadata support.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Have you tried Compatibility in the program properties?

Re: How can I use Sony VGPXL1B MEDIA CHANGER IN VISTA ULTIMATE 64

Yeah. It wants VISTA, and doesn't see Vista 64 as Vista. If I set
Compatibility to XP, W2K or W98/95, it offers a slightly different complaint
- but still won't run "Setup requires Microsoft Vista- please install Vista
and run Setup again."

Also, trying to run the .MSI installer package that is called by the
Installshield SETUP.EXE gives the same message.

I contacted Sony and they confirmed, the setup package won't run on 64 bit
operating systems. They suggested I install Vista 32, or buy a Sony VAIO PC
with Vista 32 pre-installed.

I tried using a Microsoft Virtual PC running Vista Ultimate 32, and the
SETUP ran just fine, but the Virtual PC doesn't support IEEE 1394 which is
how the Media Changer connects. So the software installs and run OK under
Windows Media Center, but the changer isn't "seen" due to lack of 1394
support in Virtual PC.
