Dear friends:

How big is SP3?

Normally, Microsoft policy has been that any Service Pack is self
sufficient, that is, it includes all the previous ones. But SP2 was
260MB big, so, will SP3 include SP1 and SP2 in it, or will be
necessary to have SP2 previously installed in your machine to install
it, making SP3 lighter to download?

Thanks

SP3 RC1 is a well known (with a Google search) 366.1MB in size at this
point.
That is "Release Candidate 1" <- an incomplete/non-supported product.

As with prior service packs for Microsoft operating systems --> Service Pack
3 is cumulative.
It contains all prior service pack content and most post-SP2 content.

As far as the downloaded content - it depends on how you get it. If you
download it/order the CD they will likely have available when it is
released, it will probably be 350+MB in size (if nothing changes, 366.1MB in
size.) If you utilize automatic updates and/or
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to obtain it - you may actually have to
download *less* than that to get it installed depending on the current
status of your machine in terms of updates.

SP3 is over 340MB, SP3 includes everything in SP2 plus all things
after that. It does not require SP2 but will likely require Windows
Installer 3.1.

It isn't released yet, and yes Operating System service packs include
the updates from prior Service Packs.

Shenan

That figure does not of course include working space to be able to
complete the install. I appreciate Juan did not ask this question but
what minimum free space do you think is needed to install.

I should never answer right before I go to sleep...

"366.1" should be "336.1" <- never type sleepy.

As for the additional question - of the space required for its installation
(the slack space necessary to expand/etc) - No idea. I don't believe that
information has been posted nor have I had any machines with such small
system partitions that I have been notified I did not have enough free
space. Sounds like something to try in a Virtual PC...

SP3 Information (current information):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936929

(The above/below can even lead you to a link to download it.)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsxp/0a5b9b10-17e3-40d9-8d3c-0077c953a761.aspx

*NOTE* Do not install this thinking this is the final release of SP3 - it is
*not*.

Shenan

The point Shenan I was trying to make was that whenever we answer
questions like this we need to warn that significantly more space than
the download size is needed. Lots of users have minimal sized system
partitions and this download will cause those users problems. We have 2
months to get the message across. If you spread the word others will
follow your lead.

Just trying to think ahead.
