Hosts file in Windows XP

I have moved the Hosts file to a different volume, have updated the reg key
to point to the new location, but it still references the windows default
location of c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Does anyone know if you can have the hosts file stored on a different drive
/ volume than the c: ? and has anyone got this working ?

Why would anyone want to move the Hosts file? What is the point?

Because very often, he's asking the wrong question, and if we understand the
poster's motive, we can often offer a much better solution to his problem
than simply answering the question.

Here's a single very simple example. I've seen someone ask for instructions
on how to do a clean reinstallation, when it turned out that the problem he
wanted to solve was how to get Task Manager out of Tiny Footprint Mode. Once
the reason for the question was understood, it was much more helpful for him
to get the answer "just doubleclick anywhere on the border."
