Hi am using ubuntu and have a question?

Where in ubuntu is the files i can edit , I want to change some stuff, Im not new to programming been using ubuntu for sometime now.Just want to get more familiar with it and Is there away that I can make my own themes or replace or make a new one. Like replacement shell. Can you guys give me info on where to find this and some stuff like that, I just want to get deep in to it more. Thanks.:)
